Our Recent Palisade Fencing Installation
Our recent project involved an existing timber boundary next to a public green.
The old fencing had become tired and was ready for replacement. Rather than continuing to repair a boundary that had reached the end of its practical lifespan, new steel palisade fencing provided a much more durable solution.
The first stage was removing the old timber.
The wooden fencing panels and fence posts were carefully dismantled and removed from the site. This left us with a clear boundary line from which the new fencing installation could begin.
We could then position the new metal posts, establish the correct post centres and install the support rails. The palisade pales were subsequently attached to create the finished boundary.
Although this particular job was uncomplicated, correct positioning still matters. A palisade fencing installation needs to be straight, secure and properly supported. Small errors at the first post or with the post centres can become increasingly noticeable as the total length of fencing increases.
Getting those basics right from the start makes a considerable difference to the finished job.
How We Install Palisade Fencing
Every site is slightly different, so we do not treat palisade fencing installation as a simple one-size-fits-all process.
Before work starts, we consider the total length of the proposed fence, ground type, ground conditions, required fence height, access and whether Palisade Gates need to be incorporated.
The existing boundary also needs to be considered.
On replacement projects, timber fencing, old metal security fencing, chain link fence systems or damaged fencing panels may need to be removed before installation can begin.
Once the fence line has been established, positions for the metal posts are marked at the required post centres.
Where dig-in posts are being used, holes are excavated to the appropriate depth for the fence and site conditions. Posts can then be securely set using mixed concrete.
Ground conditions are particularly important here.
Softer ground may require a different approach from firm ground, while sloping ground and uneven ground need to be considered when establishing both the position and ground level of the finished fence.
Once the posts are secure, horizontal rails are fitted between them. These support rails form an important structural part of the palisade fencing system.
The steel pales are then attached to the horizontal support rails using the appropriate fixings, such as steel bolts, Palisade Fishplates or link plates depending upon the particular fencing system being installed.
The result is a strong, continuous security boundary.
Why Proper Support Rails and Metal Posts Matter
A palisade fence is only as good as the structure supporting it.
The vertical pales may be the most obvious part of the finished fence, but the metal posts and horizontal rails provide much of its underlying strength.
Correctly positioned fence posts keep the complete run aligned, while properly installed support rails help distribute forces across the fencing system.
This becomes particularly important on longer boundaries and high-security applications.

Galvanised Palisade Fencing and Zinc Coating
Steel needs protection when it is permanently exposed to British weather.
A protective zinc coating is commonly used on steel palisade fencing to reduce the risk of corrosion. Galvanised steel provides a durable finish that can significantly reduce the amount of routine maintenance required.
Depending upon the project, polyester powder coating can also be specified.
Powder coating provides an additional finished surface and allows palisade fencing to be supplied in an appropriate RAL colour where appearance is important.
This can be particularly useful where metal security fencing needs to integrate more naturally with a commercial development, school, residential environment or existing corporate colour scheme.
A galvanised or appropriately coated palisade fence should provide years of service with relatively minimal maintenance.
Palisade Fencing Versus Chain Link Fencing
Chain link fencing and palisade fencing can both be used to establish secure boundaries, but they serve slightly different requirements.
Chain link fencing is flexible and can provide a practical and economical way of enclosing large areas. Palisade fencing has a considerably more substantial appearance and can provide a stronger physical and visual deterrent.
The steel pales make climbing difficult, while the robust construction makes the fencing difficult to cut through using ordinary tools.
That does not automatically mean palisade is the correct choice for every site.
At Ashdale Fencing, we would rather recommend fencing based upon your actual needs, site conditions and budget than automatically sell the most substantial option available.
For some properties, mesh or chain link fencing could be perfectly adequate. For sites where added security and added protection are priorities, steel palisade fencing may be the better choice.
Can Palisade Gates Be Installed?
Yes.
Palisade Gates can be incorporated into a palisade fencing installation to provide pedestrian or vehicle access without compromising the overall appearance of the perimeter.
Gate positioning should ideally be considered during the planning stage rather than treated as an afterthought.
The width of the opening, type of traffic, ground conditions and frequency of use all need to be considered.
For commercial and industrial sites, access may need to accommodate delivery vehicles, plant or regular staff traffic. A smaller pedestrian Palisade Gate may be more appropriate elsewhere.
Correctly specified gates allow seamless integration with the surrounding palisade fencing system.
Palisade Fencing on Sloping or Uneven Ground
One question we are frequently asked about fencing installation is what happens when the ground is not level.
Fortunately, uneven ground does not automatically rule out palisade fencing.
The exact installation method depends on the gradient and site conditions. Changes in ground level need to be identified before the posts and rails are installed so the finished fencing follows the boundary properly.
This is one of the advantages of choosing expert installation rather than attempting to make a standard fencing kit fit unsuitable ground.

For example, replacing easily accessible timber fencing on level ground may be considerably more straightforward than installing a high-security palisade fence around an operational industrial site with restricted access and uneven ground.

Can Additional Security Be Added to Palisade Fencing?
