More fencing and fewer hedges also have their advantages when it comes to maintenance. However, in our drive to box off our land and improve our own personal environment, this has in recent years been at the expense of one of Britain’s best-loved small mammals, the Hedgehog.
Hedgehog highways are a fairly new idea, new fences look great but many of them are actually blocking small mammals from passing freely between gardens, which is part of their natural nocturnal behaviour.

That’s why Ashdale Fencing is pleased to announce that we are able to fit a ‘Hedgehog highway’ gate to any fence we install. It looks neat and is just the right size to let our spikey little pals go about their business in their normal manner.
As you probably know Hedgehog numbers are dwindling and we want to do our best to help them find their way through your garden. Where possible, if we can keep them off the roads that’s the aim.
Did you know that hedgehogs are good for your garden?
Hedgehogs are a great small mammal to count as garden visitors. Along with any birds, Hedgehogs literally hoover up small slugs and snails as well as other insects and invertebrates such as Beetles, Earwigs, Caterpillars, Earthworms, Millipedes and Fly larvae.
Hedgehogs hunt by snuffling through the undergrowth, they have a very keen sense of smell and also very good hearing which helps them to catch any prey they disturb. While invertebrates are top of the menu, hedgehogs are opportunistic eaters. Carrion, fallen fruit should a hog come across them.
It’s thought a lack of food may be a factor in the hedgehog’s decline. This is because invertebrate numbers have been reduced by agricultural intensification and pesticide use.
